Dallas D Banjo Ukulele for sale

This is a particularly lovely example of the Dallas ‘D’ Model banjo ukulele, serial number D 1941, complete with its original shaped case.

The D Model has always been one of our favourites from the original Dallas range. It has a quality and character all of its own, and the figuring on this particular example is lovely – especially across the back of the resonator.

It has clearly been looked after during its lifetime and presents beautifully, whilst still retaining the age and character you would expect from a genuine vintage instrument.

And most importantly, this isn't just one for the display cabinet. It has been through our workshop, has been properly set up and is ready to be played and enjoyed.

The Dallas D has long been a desirable choice for players wanting to step beyond the more basic models in the Dallas range, and this example has plenty going for it.

It offers the combination we always like to find in a vintage instrument – quality construction, originality, attractive condition and genuine playability. The Birdseye Maple gives the D a distinctly more refined appearance, whilst its construction delivers a voice these instruments are known and loved for.

Add the original shaped case, and this becomes a very complete example – equally appealing to an established banjo ukulele player, a George Formby enthusiast or someone looking for a quality vintage British instrument they can actually get out of the case and enjoy.

WORKSHOP INSPECTION & PREPARATION:

This Dallas D has been through the Alan Yates Music Instrument Care Service, where it was inspected and prepared for sale.

The instrument was lightly cleaned, both the woodwork and metalwork. The fingerboard has been cleaned and treated. Vellum adjusted, strings and bridge changed.

The instrument has also been fully set up and play-tested and is ready for its next owner to enjoy.

CONDITION:

For an instrument of this age, this Dallas D remains in very good condition and presents extremely well.

As you would expect from an instrument that has been played and enjoyed for many decades, there is age-related cosmetic wear. These are mainly evident to the back of the neck and resonator, together with some scratching to the plated metalwork.

There are a couple of previous repairs. A repair approximately 90mm in length has been carried out to the bottom edge of the resonator, where there appears to have previously been a crack in the veneer. This has been well executed and refinished. There is also a repair to the back of the headstock, filling two holes which may once have accommodated a name plate, together with a small repair at the bottom of the fingerboard.

Despite the above, this is a very good, well-loved and well-played example for its age. More importantly, it remains a strong playing instrument. We considers it one of the best Dallas D Models to have passed through our hands, both in the way it plays and feels and, its sound.

HISTORICAL NOTE:

The George Formby range of banjo ukuleles was introduced in 1938, produced by George Houghton & Sons of Birmingham in association with John E. Dallas & Sons, who handled the advertising, wholesale distribution and sales.

Five models made up the range – A, B, C, D and E – with each step representing an increasingly higher specification. The D Model sat immediately below the top-of-the-range E and was one of the most attractive instruments in the series, with its distinctive Birdseye Maple construction, twelve tension hooks, diamond-cut flange and resonator.
