About Us - More Than a Music Shop
The story behind Alan Yates Music
Who We Are
Alan Yates Music was founded by Alyson Yates in 2020. What began during the Covid pandemic, when live performing was no longer possible, grew into a business built on passion, resilience, and a love of music.
Alyson’s vision was to create something different from a high-street shop — a specialist space for banjo-ukuleles, instrument care, unique art and design, and a truly personal approach to customer service.
Music has always been at the heart of what we do. By pooling together our individual skills and experiences, Alan Yates Music became a place where instruments are restored, products & services are offered, and our live music is shared.
What We Do
Alan, a former antique furniture restorer and lifelong musician, specialises in instrument care — from set-ups, maintenance and repairs to full restorations. He also offers tuition in banjo-ukulele and wooden ukulele.
Alyson, who previously ran her own design business, manages the shop and website, and continues to create unique artwork and bespoke designs on instruments and other products.
Together, we provide expert valuations and provenance certificates, while also performing live shows that bring music to life. Alongside our online music gifts, we also design bespoke, music-themed gifts and furniture.
Why We’re Different
Unlike big music shops or anonymous online sellers, we are an independent specialist business. Everything is handled personally by us, with care, knowledge, and passion. Our individual skill sets and strengths complement each other and form the very heart of Alan Yates Music.
Customers come to us because we offer something unique — expertise in banjo-ukuleles and vintage instruments, decades of combined experience, and a mix of restoration, tuition, entertainment, and personal service that you won’t find on the high street.
Our reputation is built on trust, personal care, and a genuine love of both music and our craft.
Our Aim
Our aim is simple: to preserve heritage instruments, inspire new players, and keep music alive — both in homes and on stage.
