Practical Music Lessons
Banjo Ukulele * Ukulele * Guitar
One-to-one lessons with Alan Yates.
Relaxed, practical and tailored to you. In person or online.
Learn Through Playing, Not Textbooks
Alan's lessons are designed for people who want to play music, not study it.
Rather than following formal grades or focusing on music theory, Alan teaches through demonstration, explanation and practical playing, helping students develop confidence, good technique and, most importantly, enjoy making music.
Whether you're learning your first chords, developing your rhythm or tackling more advanced techniques, lessons progress at a pace that suits you, with clear demonstrations and practical advice every step of the way.
Every student learns differently. Some want to accompany their singing, others want to master the music of George Formby, while some simply want to enjoy making music at home. Whatever your goal, lessons are adapted to suit your interests, experience and pace of learning.
For Alan, the greatest satisfaction comes from seeing students grow in confidence and enjoy playing music for themselves.

Banjo Ukulele Specialist Lessons
The banjo ukulele occupies a unique place in British musical history. While many music teachers offer guitar or ukulele lessons, dedicated banjo ukulele tuition is surprisingly difficult to find, making specialist guidance invaluable for anyone wishing to learn the instrument properly.
Ukulele Lessons
The ukulele is one of the most enjoyable and accessible instruments to learn. Its compact size and approachable nature make it ideal for complete beginners, while its versatility offers plenty of scope for more experienced players wishing to broaden their repertoire and technique.
Guitar Lessons
From acoustic to electric, the guitar remains one of the world's most popular instruments for good reason. Its versatility allows players to enjoy everything from simple chord accompaniment to more advanced rhythm and lead playing, making it an instrument that can provide a lifetime of enjoyment.
Your Lessons, Your Goals
No two students are the same, which is why every lesson is tailored to your individual interests, experience and ambitions.
Perhaps you've always wanted to learn your favourite song, accompany your own singing, master the music of George Formby, enjoy the sounds of the 1950s and 60s... or simply build confidence with your chords and rhythm. Whatever inspires you to pick up your instrument, your lessons are designed around your own musical interests and personal goals.
There is no rigid syllabus to follow. Instead, Alan works with each student at a comfortable pace, helping to build confidence, develop practical skills and make learning both enjoyable and rewarding.
Above all, the aim is simple — to help you become a more confident and capable musician while enjoying every step of the journey.
